Cruising the 2016 Buick Cascada in the Florida Keys

buick cascadaSold in Europe since 2013 as the Opel Cascada, Buick is bringing the cute open-top 2+2 to the United States in an effort to capture some of the 125,000 annual convertible registrations. This is the first time in more than two decades that the premium brand has marketed a convertible in its lineup. Buick says the Cascada targets a space most recently vacated by the Volkswagen Eos, Chrysler 200, and Volvo C60 convertibles.

The Buick Cascada made its American debut in early January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and was launched to the media in Key West later that month. As a fan of drop-top driving, I can think of no better way to enjoy the top-down experience of a sporty convertible than to pilot it more than 150 miles along US Highway 1 from Miami to Key West, Florida. We cruised the highway for hours, experiencing the sun-runner with its top up and down on a variety of road surfaces; alas, the long, straight highway didn’t offer much opportunity to evaluate handling performance on twisty roads.
