Every year, drowsy driving contributes to accidents, injuries, and deaths from one side of the United States to the next.
Regardless of your final destination, it is important that you stay alert at all times. Before we go any further, here is the one tip that you never want to overlook: if you ever feel like you are too drowsy to drive, pull off to the side of the road and take a break. This may not be something you want to do, but it is best from a safety perspective.
Here are three additional tips for staying alert:
1. Put your window down. This can go a long way in helping you stay alert. This is much better than using the air conditioner during the summer months or the hot air during the winter months.
This may not make for the ideal driving temperature, but it is sure to keep you alert – and that is what matters most.
2. Stop to refuel (you, not your car). From a cup of coffee to a healthy snack, you may be surprised at how much better you feel once you stop off for a break and to refuel your body.
3. Talk to somebody. Are you traveling with a passenger? If so, talk with this person as often as possible, as it will help keep you awake.
Note: as tempting as it may be, you don’t want to talk on your cell phone as this can add to your problems.
Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. If you feel your head bobbing and /or your eyes closing, it is time to get off the road. This will keep you and those around you safe.
