Proper Tire Pressure is More Important Than You Think

When it comes to tire maintenance, many people never pay much attention. Instead, they rely on their mechanic to tell them when they need new tires. While there is nothing wrong with this, don’t overlook the importance of proper tire pressure.

Have you found yourself driving on overinflated or underinflated tires? If so, you are taking a big risk. Here are some of the many things that could happen:

1. Reduced fuel economy. This may not have anything to do with your safety, but it will take a big bite out of your bank account. Overinflated or underinflated tires could result in a five percent decrease in fuel economy (if not more). Imagine how much money this would cost you over the long run.

2. Stopping distance. When tires are properly inflated you don’t have anything to worry about. However, improperly inflated tires may lead to longer stopping distances. As a result, you are putting yourself in an unsafe position every time you take to the road. Is that a risk you are willing to take?

3. Ride and handling. Overinflated tires, for instance, are unable to absorb the impact of the road as designed. As a result, you can expect a rough ride along with more wear and tear on your suspension. In other words, you are not just harming your tires. Other parts of your vehicle are taking a beating as well.

Now can you see why it is so important to ensure that your tires are properly inflated at all times? Make it a habit to check this at least once a month. Consider doing so when you stop for gas. This way, if you need more air or have too much, you can use the station’s air machine to take care of the problem on the spot.
