What to Include in a Roadside Emergency Kit

If you don’t currently have a roadside emergency kit stashed away in your trunk, now is the time to put one of these together. While you may never use the items in this kit, you never know when disaster could strike. Some people opt to purchase a pre-made kit, hoping that it has everything they need. There is nothing wrong with this, however, you will miss out on the ability to choose exactly what is included.

It doesn’t matter if you drive hundreds of miles per day or only get behind the wheel a couple times per week, having a roadside emergency kit is a must.

What your Kit Needs

Now that you know the importance of having a roadside emergency kit, it is time to get started. Here is a list of some of the many items you should include:

  • Flashlight
  • 12 foot jumper cables
  • Roadside flares
  • Blanket
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pliers
  • Wrench
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Duct tape
  • Ice scraper
  • Bottled water
  • Rags

In addition to these items, add the following to your trunk (if you have the space):

  • Two quarts of oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Energy bars
  • Roll of paper towels

Check it Often

Just because you know your roadside emergency kit is in your trunk doesn’t mean you should never look at it. Even if you don’t run into a disaster, you should review the contents of your kit a couple times per year. This will ensure that everything is still in good shape, and that you don’t need to add any other items.

It is easy to overlook the benefits of carrying a roadside emergency kit, especially if you have never been stranded in the past. But remember, you never know what the future holds.

If something goes wrong, you don’t want your problem to get worse by not having the appropriate items and equipment on hand. To protect against a breakdown, contact FAR to have your vehicle inspected from top to bottom.
