There is nothing more frustrating than realizing your car is leaking oil. This doesn’t mean your car is going to breakdown. It doesn’t even mean something major is wrong. What it does mean, however, is that you should address the problem as soon as possible.
There are many reasons why your car may be leaking oil, including:
1. Worn out oil filter. Over time, your oil filter can begin to wear out. This causes it to become loose or misaligned. Consider yourself lucky if this is the only cause of your leak. The remedy is simple: a new filter.
2. The valve gasket. The more miles you put on your vehicle the greater chance there is that you will see a leak from this part of the engine. Over time, the valve gasket may begin to fail. If this happens, a small leak will appear.
3. The oil drain plug. There are many causes for a leak from the oil drain plug, including misaligned threads or a loose plug. While you may not be able to spot a problem with the plug, your mechanic won’t have any trouble.
There is no guaranteed way to prevent an oil leak. The best thing you can do is properly maintain your vehicle. Regardless of the make and model, you should stick with the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.
