Installing a car seat is not rocket science, but at the same time many people continue to make the same mistakes.
If a car seat is not properly installed, your child will be at greater risk of injury in the event of an accident.
To ensure that your car seat is installed correctly, here are four tips shared by Safe Kids Worldwide:
1. Inch test. A car seat that is properly installed will not move more than an inch, front to back or side to side, upon giving it a strong pull.
2. Pinch test. Is the harness buckled tight? Is it coming from the correct slots? Once your child is in place, pinch the strap around his or her shoulder. If you are unable to grab onto excess webbing the seat is installed correctly.
3. Never use the seat belt and the lower anchors at the same time. You should pick the one that gives the car seat the best fit.
4. Don’t start the car until you are 100 percent sure that the car seat is installed correctly. If you have any questions or concerns, read through the manual. You never want to take a risk when it comes to placing your child in an improperly installed car seat. This can lead to serious injury or even death.
If you are concerned that your car seat is not installed correctly, head for your vehicle right now to double check. The four tips above can help you determine if adjustments need to be made.
