Can you think of anything more miserable than driving in a hot car? It doesn’t matter if you are traveling across the country or down the street for a gallon of milk, the heat can make you extremely uncomfortable.
If your car’s AC is not working or you don’t want to turn it on for any reason, there are things you can do to stay cool. Here are three tips to consider:
1. Place a wet rag over the middle vent. This may sound silly, but it helps cool the air that blows through it. Rags can dry out in a hurry, but if you have a few on hand, as well as a water source, it is a great idea to consider.
2. Use ice. Many years ago, people placed blocks of ice on floorboards under a vent to cool their car. This is what you call “old school air conditioning.” If you are going to give this idea a try, be sure to place the ice block in a pan or plastic bag. Neglecting to do so will result in a lot of water in your car, and you don’t want that.
3. Roll down the windows. As obvious as it sounds, many shy away from the idea because they don’t want to let in the warm air from outside. When doing this, operate your fresh air vent at the same time. If you have a sun roof, open it up as well. This will help promote air flow, even if you are sitting in traffic.
None of these ideas are going to keep you as cool as your car’s AC, but they should be considered nonetheless. You may be surprised at just how effective these strategies can be.
